March 14, 2025

Varnum partner David Caldon has been recognized as a “Go To Lawyer” for Commercial Real Estate by Michigan Lawyers Weekly.

Caldon is a member of the Real Estate and Municipal Practice Teams at Varnum and specializes in real estate and land use law with a strong focus on renewable energy development. His skills are instrumental in helping renewable energy developers navigate Michigan’s evolving regulatory landscape. He has played a pivotal role in projects totaling more than one gigawatt of capacity—enough to power approximately 750,000 homes—establishing himself as a trusted adviser in the industry.

Caldon’s notable achievements include work on the successful permitting of renewable energy projects in geographically diverse locations in Michigan using the local siting process. He is also actively involved in some of the first projects developed under PA 233, Michigan’s new state siting process for renewable energy projects.

In addition to representing developers of renewable energy projects, Caldon maintains a broad zoning and land use practice and represents the firm’s public sector clients. He guides clients through each phase of the development process—from initial land acquisition and permitting to construction contracting, construction financing and permanent securitized financing. With his extensive experience, he serves as an effective liaison between developers and public bodies, fostering collaborative solutions to complex development challenges.
