Q: What attracted you to become a lawyer?
A: I grew up in West Michigan and from an early age told my parents I was going to work in the Varnum building in Grand Rapids. Throughout college, the idea that I could advocate for others through writing was really appealing to me. Once I began to gain a better understanding of what the practice of law entailed, I became interested in corporate and litigation work. Support and mentorship from college professors and a family friend who was an attorney also furthered my interest in becoming a lawyer.
Q: How did you decide to focus on your practice?
A: We live in Ann Arbor and a significant portion of our community and friendships involve physicians. I became interested in business law and particularly in how business concepts apply to health care. Varnum offered the opportunity for me to learn from excellent health care attorneys, while also servicing litigation matters.
Q: What does client service mean to you?
A: Client service means providing excellent advice and responsiveness in order to further the client’s business goals. I enjoy connecting with clients and forming strong relationships which are significant to the results we obtain together.
Q: What do you most enjoy about being a Varnum lawyer?
A: I enjoy the talented teams I work with on a daily basis. The people are not only fantastic professionals but also incredible individuals.
Q: What is your proudest career achievement?
A: Two achievements stand out to me—the first involved representing a small business early in my career in a litigation matter that, but for the litigation, would no longer be in business, and the second was assisting in closing a $35 million health care transaction.
