The sale of Lansing-based Granger Energy Services division to Energy Developments (US) Ltd. of Australia was recently recognized by the Global M&A Network as the Global Energy and Services ‘Deal of the Year’ in the midmarket category.
The award was announced at the recent M&A Atlas Awards ceremony held June 5 in New York. Covering five continents and evaluating almost 600 eligible deals, just over 50 deals were selected as winners in various categories.
Varnum represented Lansing-based Granger in the matter that closed last August. The Granger Energy Services division included 16 landfill gas-to-energy sites across six states. EDL took control of those sites, retaining the division’s 45 employees and moving its North American headquarters to the Lansing area. Granger retains ownership of its landfills and continues to provide trash hauling and recycling services.
Varnum’s M&A team for the transaction was led by Pete Roth and Jake Droppers. Varnum represented Granger in all aspects of the sale including negotiating the purchase and sale agreement and ancillary documents, and coordinating antitrust filings. The Varnum M&A team worked closely with Granger management and ownership teams in connection with the negotiation and execution of the definitive documents.
“Pete, Jake and the Varnum team provided valuable, practical and timely advice and counsel throughout the process of selling the Granger Energy Services division to EDL,” said Granger CEO Keith L. Granger. “The Varnum team was excellent and was consistently available to answer questions or to address any issues that arose during the negotiations with EDL and their counsel.”
